Boucla

Boucla is a long-standing cafe on Rokeby Road in Subiaco, with a history spanning more than 20 years. It was established by a family with Greek heritage from Kastellorizo, and remains closely associated with the local cafe scene. The food draws on Mediterranean and Latin American influences, with breakfast, brunch, lunch and cakes available across the day.

Breakfast is served from early morning and includes familiar egg dishes alongside more distinctive plates such as Turkish eggs, shakshuka and huevos rancheros. Other options include zucchini mint fritters, avocado on toast, Turkish fried potatoes and a pork shoulder benedict. The lunch selection changes according to availability and includes pies, tarts, salads, bagels and rolls, with dishes such as kotopita, spanakopita, Persian slipper and vegetarian soufra listed on the menu.

Cakes are one of Boucla’s notable offerings. The gluten-free cake available by the slice changes daily, while whole cakes can be ordered for pickup. That makes the cafe suited to a planned cake order as well as a casual breakfast, lunch or afternoon stop, with the display fridge also offering a changing selection of fresh bagels and rolls.

Inside, Boucla has a deliberately cosy, Moroccan-inspired setting, with colourful pottery, mosaic bowls and other Moroccan touches contributing to its shadowy, distinctive character. A leafy courtyard at the rear provides another place to sit. The combination of an intimate interior, courtyard seating and a menu that moves between Mediterranean and Latin American influences gives the Subiaco cafe a clear sense of identity without separating its food from its long local history.
