Why it's worth checking out
Hop Café is a specialty coffee shop, roaster and concept store in Victoria Park, Perth, built around the idea of making coffee exploration more approachable. Rather than focusing on one house style, it introduces single origins from around the world, alongside espresso blends and coffees from local roasters. The shop also presents different brewing methods, giving visitors the chance to compare coffees and find something that suits their taste.
Its signature experience is coffee tasting, described as being similar to a cellar door visit but with coffee and matched desserts instead of wine and cheese. Guests can choose a self-guided tasting flight or take part in a private session led by a barista, with freshly brewed coffees served alongside plated dessert pairings. That format makes Hop a natural choice for coffee enthusiasts, curious first-timers and small groups looking for a more considered café outing than a quick takeaway. The private tastings are designed for groups of four to six, according to the venue’s event information.
Hop also sells specialty coffee to brew at home, including coffee pouches designed to be used without elaborate equipment. Its own small-batch roasting operation grew from the shop’s original focus on showcasing local roasters and single origins. The team says it hand-picks coffees it genuinely enjoys, with roasting carried out in Western Australia. Product releases featured on the website include coffees with names such as Kayon, Fazenda and Manos, although the available selection may change.
The business is led by April Chen, the director and head of coffee, who brings barista and café management experience, and Yvette Lin, the director and head chef, whose background includes a busy breakfast bar in Taiwan and restaurant work in Australia. Creative director Nelson Tsao completes the core team. Together, they have shaped Hop as an inviting space for learning, tasting and connecting coffee drinkers with the wider roasting community. It is best suited to solo visitors who enjoy exploring coffee, as well as couples and small groups interested in a structured tasting experience.
